LISI AUTOMOTIVE and ArcelorMittal join forces to help transform the automotive industry with XCarb® recycled and renewably produced low carbon-emissions steel

Grandvillars, September 19, 2023 - LISI AUTOMOTIVE, world leader in the manufacture of fastening components and assembly systems for the automotive industry, is pleased to announce the signing of a strategic partnership with ArcelorMittal, the world's leading steel and mining company. This collaboration aims to push back the limits of sustainability and efficiency in the automotive industry by participating in the development and integration of XCarb® recycled and renewably producedsteel into manufacturing processes.

Committing to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and reducing CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030 in Europe, ArcelorMittal is at the forefront of innovation in carbon-neutral steel production. Its XCarb® initiative is designed to bring together ArcelorMittal’s products and steelmaking activities towards carbon-neutral steel. This initiative is perfectly aligned with LISI AUTOMOTIVE's vision of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Together, the two companies will strive to reduce the automotive industry's carbon footprint while improving product quality and performance.

Through this partnership, LISI AUTOMOTIVE and ArcelorMittal plan to develop innovative components and assembly systems using XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel products, which will ultimately significantly reduce the carbon emissions associated with vehicle manufacturing.

Today, ArcelorMittal can manufacture wire rods with less than 700 kg of CO2 per ton of steel at its plants in Hamburg and Warsaw, saving up to 70% of CO2 emissions compared with traditional production methods based on the Blast Furnace Route. With the innovative DRI route of steelmaking, which is a key part of ArcelorMittal’s decarbonisation strategy, the CO2 impact of the products will be reduced even further.

XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel is designed to come with low carbon-emissions, being strong and fully compatible with the automotive industry's high standards of safety and material performance.

For LISI AUTOMOTIVE, this partnership is in line with the objective to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% (for scope 1, 2 and 3a) by 2030. Indeed, the purchasing of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel will represent a reduction of up to 45% of LISI AUTOMOTIVE’s carbon emissions linked to raw material purchasing at ArcelorMittal and a gross reduction of up to 10.000 tons of CO2e (the equivalent of the emissions of 10,000 Paris-New York journeys for 1 passenger).

Francois LIOTARD, CEO of LISI AUTOMOTIVE, comments: “This partnership is a new step for the automotive industry, where durability and performance go hand in hand. Together with ArcelorMittal we are determined to push back the boundaries of innovation to create solutions that benefit the planet and future generations.

Tapas RAJDERKAR, CMO of ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products, says: “ArcelorMittal is at the forefront of developing low-carbon emissions steel products. We aim to further reduce CO2 emissions to achieve carbon-neutrality and support our customers in reaching their goals. Hence, we are delighted to now start our co-operation and partnership with LISI AUTOMOTIVE! This is one important step further on the way to a green industrial future.”
