XCarb® Recycled and renewably produced

The XCarb® Recycled and renewably produced EPD is now available for rebars

After the announcement in July of the two first Environmental Production Declarations (EPDs) for its low carbon footprint products, ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products announced a third one: XCarb® recycled and renewably produced for reinforcing steel in bars. The EPDs are an addition to the already strong sustainability credentials of these products.

The EPD provides a life-cycle assessment detailing the complete environmental footprint of reinforcing steel in bars sold under ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced brand. It certifies for our XCarb® rebars a global warming potential of 300 kg CO2 per tonne of steel of finished steel, which is far below the average carbon footprint of the rebars available on the market.

This EPD is valid for XCarb® recycled and renewably produced rebars covering various steel grades and produced with a certified supply of renewable electricity.

The EPD is issued by Germany’s Institut Bauen und Umwelt (IBU), according to international standards.

ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D centre in Maizières, France and Long Products’ mills are actively working together to reduce the carbon footprint of Bars and Wire Rods; this latest achievement is just one example of the work they are doing.

About XCarb® recycled and renewably produced

XCarb® recycled and renewably produced, which was launched in March 2021, is one of the first decarbonisation initiatives from ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products, and has been designed for products made via the Electric Arc Furnace route – powered by renewable electricity – using scrap steel.

To produce XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products uses up to 100% scrap. All the electricity needed to transform the scrap into XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steels comes from renewable sources such as solar and wind power. The energy is provided by suppliers who are connected to the same grid as our production sites.

Each tonne of steel produced under the XCarb® recycled and renewably produced label has its own production certificate. The certificate guarantees that recycled steel was used in its production, and that the electrical energy used to make the steel came from renewable sources. Steel produced by ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products under the XCarb® recycled and renewably produced label is audited and certified by an independent third party.
