First tonnes of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced wire rod
ArcelorMittal Hamburg delivers the first tonnes of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced wire rod to Waelzholz
As part of their business partnership, ArcelorMittal will supply Waelzholz with XCarb® recycled and renewably produced wire rod from ArcelorMittal Hamburg. These low carbon emissions steels are produced on the basis of a high levelof scrap and 100 percent renewable electricity. The calculation of the low carbon footprint of 504 kg CO2/t of steel used in this order was realised by an external third party based on Life Cycle Assessment standard ISO 14040. The delivery of the first 20 tonnes took place on 12 January at the cold rolling company's site in Hagen, Germany. Waelzholz will use the material to manufacture heat-treated profiles for industrial applications.

A business partnership aiming to reduce environmental impacts thanks to low carbon emissions steel
ArcelorMittal and Waelzholz have been partnering towards common low carbon emissions steel for a couple of years already, with ArcelorMittal supplying them with XCarb® green steel certificates in 2021.
This long-lasting cooperation underlines the decarbonisation plans of both companies. Waelzholz is pursuing an ambitious roadmap that envisions carbon neutrality by 2045. The technology leader is the first company in the cold rolling industry to implement a validated process for calculating the product carbon footprint on an item-by-item basis. At the same time, Waelzholz is creating the technological conditions to be able to replace natural gas with hydrogen in its own production.

Scrap and renewable energy: the levers of low CO2 steel
To produce XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, ArcelorMittal uses up to 100% scrap and renewable electricity coming from renewable sources such as solar and wind power.
ArcelorMittal estimates that XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel has a carbon footprint as low as 0.3 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel product when the metallics are 100% scrap, which is certified by a published Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
We pass the CO2 savings of our investments to our customers
The ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ initiatives also include XCarb® green steel certificates which are specifically designed for ArcelorMittal’s steel products made from iron ore in a blast furnace. They are based on real CO2 savings as well as wider initiatives which reduce ArcelorMittal’s carbon footprint.
We can add up these important CO2 savings and then pass them onto our customers in the form of a certificate, which has been verified by an independent auditor.
